It’s been a long time since the days when Corel Draw was a big name in design. Today’s landscape is primarily dominated by the Adobe Suite of products. However, this $1,000 suite of products isn’t something that your start-up business has to have in it’s budget. There is actually an open source graphics suite that, in my opinion, rivals the Adobe Suite: GIMP. No, it’s not the guy from Pulp Fiction. GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. They have versions for MAC and Windoze. They even have plug-ins that you can use to extend the functionality of the application, just like Adobe.
GIMP has a true open source spirit. There is a strong community of support for the application and plug-ins. There are plenty of people willing to help, and there are tutorials online that show the “how-to” of using GIMP. While die-hard Adobe fans may never give GIMP much thought, it is certainly a tool worth evaluating for your graphics needs and much more intelligent than using unlicensed software.
