John McCain 2008 Out of Touch with America

I can’t think of another candidate running for office that is more out of touch with reality and what is going on in our culture than Republican Candidate for President John McCain. It bothers me that someone who is trying to become elected to our highest office is utterly ignorant to “real life” in the US.  He seems to live a sheltered existence that is far removed from the average person. The my biggest concern is: what context and empathy will inform his policy decisions?

Here are some examples of why I think McCain is out of touch with the American culture:

“I am learning to get online myself, and I will have that down fairly soon, getting on myself. I don’t expect to be a great communicator, I don’t expect to set up my own blog, but I am becoming computer literate to the point where I can get the information that I need.” States John McCain to a New York Times Reporter (The Washintonian 7/2008)

“I was looking at the Sturgis schedule, and noticed that you had a beauty pageant, so I encouraged Cindy to compete. I told her [that] with a little luck, she could be the only woman to serve as both the First Lady and Miss Buffalo Chip.” Does McCain know that that would mean Cindy would have to take her cloths off.  Please spare us the horrible site, please… (McCain at the 2008 Sturgis Rally)

“I think — I’ll have my staff get to you. It’s condominiums where — I’ll have them get to you.” –after being asked how many houses he and his wife, Cindy, own (about.com)

There are almost too many other examples to list.  My point is… think carefully about voting for McCain.  He doesn’t face the same consequences for his actions as you might for his actions.  His disconnect with the general culture of the US poses a serious risk and may result in long-term damage to domestic and foreign policy. He really has nothing to lose and we all do.
