Passion at work… Is It Really Possible?

On the surface, I have a great job. The money rocks, the people are very kind, the management cares about its employees–what else can I wish for?
Well, the products are lucrative, but not innovative or pushing the envelope in any particular direction. I recently have been reading Rules For Revolutionaries: The Capitalist Manifesto and Guy Kawasaki only reinforces what I have been feeling deep down, that I need to be around creatively charged environments that raise the level of talent I can draw from myself.
Product development is not a superficial venture. It can change people’s life. Think about the iPod’s non-material impact on people. A reunion with music and a reinvigoration of the music industry (which was choking on its own blood). Consider the productization of the internet. That was hardly a superficial event. It changed the world and opened doors to a new era and new ways of thinking and communicating. Today, for example, I spoke with my friend Kerry from London and I didn’t have to part with my money in the process. Think about the productization of hybrid cars–and its eventual impact on our consumption of fossil fuels.
Products enable revolutions and I want to be part of that action. I love the process of solving big problems and applying technology to those issues I set out to solve.
So, is it possible for me to do this and be passionate about it? I think it is, but it will have to be on my own terms. Look forward to our radio show series on start up companies. I admit, its a search for self exercise, but I hope you all find some aspect that enables you to find a passion and work it into your professional lives.
