This is part four of a five part series about success micromanagement. While I highly recommend reviewing the previous three parts, part four is something that really should be an ongoing strategy for any business.
Expand your team’s Skills!
This becomes especially important when you get into micromanaging a project. You’ll remember from the previous articles that the point of micromanagement is to get out of micromanaging as quickly as possible. You’ve already laid the foundation for success of the project at this point. Your project should be back on track. Now is the time to make sure your team is left exceptionally empowered around their future work load.
Yet, Expanding your team’s skill set is something often overlooked, ignored, or thought of as the responsibility of the employee. I’ve been in countless management meetings where the upper level managers have made comments like, “They need to train themselves on their own time” or “It is not the responsibility of the company to keep our employees trained”. There is truth to each of those statements, especially for companies who do not want to succeed.
Employees should definitely keep their skill set up to date, especially if their employers are not going to send them through training. If your skills are lacking, you will get laid off, and that’s your responsibility as an employee. An employer gives you an opportunity, and the employee needs to seize that opportunity. Also, if an employer is unwilling to compensate for the training, you want to make sure that your skills are up to date for your next job!
