Who Killed the Electric Bus?

First Trolley CarToday marks the 126th anniversary of the very first trolley bus in the world. In a suburb of Berlin, Dr. Ernst Werner von Siemens presented what has now become one of the most efficient methods of mass inner city transit. Cities like San Francisco are known for their incredible trolley systems that enable daily citizens to easily navigate the cityscape.

Trolleys are zero-emissions vehicles. Of course, zero-emission vehicles are somewhat of a misnomer. The energy required to power electric vehicles comes from somewhere . Most electricity that is generated today comes from sources that generate some sort of pollution that is harmful to breathe and/or contributes to global warming.

Of course, this isn’t to say that we should stop rolling the trolley buses down the streets in major cities around the globe. In fact, San Fransisco is a nearly perfect implementation of zero-emissions mass transit. Its massive fleet of 344 Trolleys is almost entirely powered by the Hetch Hetchy Water & Power Project. Still these are trolleys and thankfully, they won’t be going away anytime soon.

So, who killed the electric bus? The similarities to the 1907 electric bus scam in London and the recent scam taking place by Zap Corporation is a bit eerie for my tastes. It is an indication of the naivety of environmentally conscience people who keep getting taken for a ride (in what seems like a “zero-emissions vehicle”). This same naivety is what leads scores of people to go purchase “Who Killed the Electric Car?” on DVD (which is primarily made from crude oil based substances). Just perform an illegal download of the video over the Internet. That is better for the environment.
