Dutch-American Friendship Day goes all the way back to 1782, when John Adams (before he became President) met with parliament of the Netherlands and was recognized as an official of the United States of America. It is a momentous occasion for the United States, as it was also the day that the house John Adams had purchased in The Hague became the first US Embassy in the world!
Unlike today, the governments of the 1700s didn’t afford much recognition to the upstart United States, so this recognition was particularly important. With the economic clout of the Netherlands, this recognition was extremely valuable to American independence and success in the world.
The Netherlands has achieved phenomenal economic success throughout history. They are recognized as having the first throughly capitalist economy in the world as well as the first full-time stock exchange in Europe. The Dutch invented insurance and retirement funds. Unfortunately, they are also known for tulip mania
Americans might also note something rather familiar with the Dutch flag.
Dean just can’t seem to get away from the Dutch either. Having just left a job working for a Dutch company as their COO.
The wonders of technology are going to put us in touch with a womentrepreneur in Amsterdam, live on our radio show tomorrow. BlogTalkRadio.com’s technology makes it easy for Dean and I to celebrate Dutch-American Friendship Day directly with the founder of Soul at Work: Marianne Korten. Marianne will be joining us to discuss what it was like to leave a cushy job of 16 year in the meeting industry to start her own business.
Why did she do it? Hear the ultra-rewarding story LIVE on the Dean and Jared radio show tomorrow at 10AM Pacific Time (that’s about 7PM for our friends in the Netherlands)!
