Dictionary.com defines success as follows:
1. the favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors.
2. the attainment of wealth, position, honors, or the like.
3. a successful performance or achievement: The play was an instant success.
4. a person or thing that is successful: She was a great success on the talk show.
The second definition is rather interesting: the attainment of wealth, position, honors, or the like. I believe this is what many, if not most, people think of about success as opposed to the first definition. It’s almost as if we’ve collapsed the first and the second definitions on each other.
Often times the only “favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors” that we view as success are “the attainment of wealth, position, honors, or the like”. Meanwhile, we are all creating successes through out our lives. They may not provide wealth. They may not come with high honors. They may not be that Vice President position at a public company. But if we can appreciate the successes that we do have every day, life can be more enjoyable.
For example, Dean and I had what seemed like the worst show of our radio show in BlogTalkRadio.com this morning. During the show, I felt like I was screwing up with my technical difficulties. It wasn’t moving along at the pace I thought it should be.
After the show, Dean and I recapped with each other. We were a little down on ourselves. The nerves were up! We had just been picked up as a featured show on BlogTalkRadio.com. There we were in full 200×200 pixel representation on the homepage of this wildly popular Internet Radio website, scrolling across the screen. To top things off, we were also at the very top of the “Featured Today” list. Were we going to top last week’s show?
