Obama, McCain, ClintonAs most of you know, I make no bones about my support of Barack Obama in the presidential race. He maps to my values and what I believe is needed in the next President. He is an intoxicating leader, who has proven time and time again, to unite and energize the country. He is exceedingly intelligent and offers a unique perspective to Washington. I appreciate his belief that well crafted public policy can enable market growth. I agree with his stance on the war in Iraq. I agree with his stance on green technology as a means to boost our economy. I like his unabashed view that talking with other world leaders can bring about change and I agree that the government has a role in ensuring people have the opportunity to succeed, but not the obligation to hand them success.

Moreover, I strongly believe that words matter. Words are how we understand the world. Words are how we represent our thoughts. Words are the primary means of communication. Words define our actions and words define our belief. So, his linguistic fortitude makes him uniquely qualified to be president. That being said, I am generally worried about viability of the Democratic Party after this race is over. Hillary Clinton is a polarizing figure. Even though she clearly has lost the race, she acts in self interest–the result is a divided democratic base and the advantage handed to the republicans.

The Republicans locking in John McCain early gives them a huge edge and McCain is a very appealing centrist Republican who has been in my consideration as someone I may vote for if the Democrats have less to offer. For McCain, I would jump party lines in certain situations; he is not a wacko bible thumping, creationist who consults Rove on how to wipe his nose and I think, generally, an honorable man. While I disagree with his policies in many cases, he is a decent alternative–to Hillary Clinton.

I am an independent voter, who happens to lean to the left, but I do not feel obligated to vote along party lines. Nancy Pelosi and Howard Dean should understand that there are a lot of us out there and we are more than willing to jump parties to make sure we have an incremental improvement to over Bush. McCain is and Hillary is not. At least McCain actually dodged bullets and know how to from experience.
