Real Recognition
Again, you are “keeping it real”. Recognition is not about telling someone they did a good job. It isn’t an “At a boy” gesture. It is an acknowledgment of the value of your employees. It shouldn’t be just key employees either. Real recognition speaks to the entire company.
Real recognition is not a reward. That is covered later. Recognition is taking the time to acknowledge every single employee for what s/he provides to the business. I mean every single one. If you don’t know what ever employee does, now is a great time to get acquainted with their manager. I’m not talking about an interrogation that will have them worried about staff cuts.
Again, you are being real. Sit down with the managers/key employees and get to know what each employee should be acknowledged for. I guarantee you that every employee in your small business has done something extraordinary for the business. They have made some sacrifice of extra time, added attention to detail, superb customer service… even just giving the job everything they can is worth acknowledgment.
The key is that you need to be genuine. Nothing wreaks of a small business owner having read an article about motivating employees more than calling a company meeting to “acknowledge all of you for your great efforts and commitment to service”. Do that and you’ll end up with a lot of commitments to updated resumes.
Make the acknowledgments at a one-to-one level. This doesn’t mean you don’t let anyone else in on the secret acknowledgment. It means that the acknowledgment is to “Bob”, not “an employee”. Acknowledging Bob in front of the rest of the accounting department for his great effort in reducing your phone service costs by 50% is good for everyone.
